We speak to Bremonts founders about the 2008 Goodwood Festival of Speed
We have been pretty vocal about our new found love affair with Bremont watches in the past few issues of Lusso Magazine, so imagine our excitement when we found out that our favourite watch brand had just become the official timers of our favourite summer event - The Goodwood Festival of Speed.
This year’s Festival is timed impeccably well for Bremont, with the imminent release of their much anticipated EP120 – their new watch which includes a dial fashioned from a genuine part of one of the most decorated Spitfires in existence. I wanted to find out from Bremont’s founders, brothers Nick and Giles English, what attracted them to the Festival of Speed, so I arranged to meet them at Goodwood House, a few months before the Festival.
I joined the Lusso convoy down to Goodwood House, as they were off to photograph the watches with Lord March’s daughter, Lady Alexandra. In the rare moments along the journey where the Shelby GT500 wasn’t roaring through the gears alongside us, the conversation turned to the weather, it had been raining so heavily the day before that Goodwood’s historic fly-in had to be cancelled. The photographer was understandably anxious about today’s cloud coverage and so was I – but for a different reason. Nick and Giles were due to arrive in their 1940s Max Holste1521 Broussard airplane and the runway at Goodwood is grass - would they be able to fly in?
Once we arrived at the house I spent a few minutes inspecting the entire Bremont range and then it was time for me to head to my interview, so I left the crew and made my way to the airfield. It was my first time at the House when either the Festival of Speed or the Revival were not on. The changes that go on in the few days before each event are mind-altering, only tiny areas of the grounds are recognisable. Walking away from the house towards the air strip I start to recognise some places, like the start line for the now world-famous Goodwood hill climb. I take a second to look up the drive towards the house. I’m stood precisely on the start line, where countless legendary drivers have been and, yes, I can be quite precise because unless they absolutely have to, they don’t remove the tyre tracks from the drives. If I sit down right now, I would share the exact same view that Lewis Hamilton will have when he screams up the hill in a month’s time – however, I’m visible from the house and who knows who might come hurtling through the gates?
I’m nearly at the airfield when I hear the faint howl of an engine come into ear-shot. It’s almost certainly them so I should really hurry up but I’m paralysed, my feet are planted and my neck’s craned back, I’m searching the skies and then I spot it. It’s definitely them; even from a distance you can spot the Broussard’s distinctive tail. I stay put and watch as they pull the throttle back and start to bank towards us.
I’ve spoken to Nick a few times whilst we were arranging this interview but I’ve only seen pictures of the pair of them. Which one is Nick and which one is Giles? Do I take a guess and hope I’m right or play it cool and see if I can recognise a voice? As I approach the aircraft I spot one of the brothers, “Hi there, I’m Kenny from Lusso!”. “Nice to meet you, my brother’s just gone to sign in, he should be back in a minute”.
No clues on the name yet then and it’s too late to ask … we chat about the weather, the fact that I’m wearing a Bremont (yes, there are a few hanging around the office that I may have ‘adopted’). The other brother is on his way back to the plane, log book in hand, “You must be Kenny? I’m Nick, I see you’ve already met Giles”.
I wanted to know more about their love of cars. It’s pretty obvious they know their planes. They made a fantastic choice with the Broussard. Nick tells me they used to have a 1930s bi-plane but “It wouldn’t fit the kids in.”. We take a seat and I ask what car stories they have, “Giles had this very old 911…”, the story begins, Giles shuffles around a bit and smirks. “He had been tweaking and playing with the engine for a few weeks. When he was convinced he was finished he gave me a call and we jumped straight onto the motorway. It was great fun, until smoke started gushing from the boot and eventually the engine burst into flames.”.
It seems that building and restoring things is in their blood, with most other attempts ending far more successfully. Nick continued, “As a child I spent hours in the workshop helping my father restore an old E-Type, a car my mother still drives to this day”.

Asics Inner Muscle Revolutionises Sport Clothing
High end sports clothing has recently gone down the route of tight elastic tops and shorts that initially appear about 4 sizes too small for the athlete. The theory is that the tops provide more overall support to muscles, which improves performance. Asics, a leading trainer company, has taken this technology one step further. Lusso took a look.

Did Russian billionaire buy 496 million euro property?
Recently, it was reported that Villa Leopolda was sold to a Russian billionaire for just under 500 million euros. It soon revealed that Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov was behind the sale. As is the habit with Russian oligarchs, Prokhorov made his billions in precious metals. In 2007 he launched a $17 billion private investment fund, so he was definitely wealthy enough to purchase the property.
