Polo comes to the beach at the Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay supported by Chukka

A Cornish beach will experience a clash of cultures on 20th June 2007 when the world of polo comes to one of the UK's best known surfing beaches.
In a UK first, Watergate Bay near Newquay will see sun-bleached surfers rubbing shoulders with exotic Argentinians as the Extreme Academy hosts the first ever arena-style polo match to be played on a UK beach.
This summer, polo is all about the people. Three exhibition games have been organised on the beach and in the city and sponsored by Chukka to show that a mix of sun, laid-back style and hot horse flesh are the perfect combination this summer.
The founder of Polo in the City and Polo on the Beach is Paul Youngs, a passionate polo player who wants to make the game more accessible to everyone. Paul said “I love polo and I want people all over the country to love it too without thinking it is all posh frocks and panamas. This is a sport which can be enjoyed by everyone and at all our events, we are encouraging families, picnics, atmosphere and fantastic play.
“I also teach the game and am keen to introduce youngsters to the sport which is part of the reason why Chukka have kindly agreed to support the events. Their high quality clothing has been designed to look as good on the edge of the polo pitch as on the beach and I am sure that players and visitors alike will be keen to buy themselves a memento of the day.”
Chukka’s Marketing Manager, Charlotte Gale, adds “It seemed ideal for us to help support such a grass-roots endeavour as Polo in the City / Polo on the Beach as our ethos as always been that polo should be accessible for all which is why we developed our accessible and stylish clothing range. This summer the three events, which we are hoping will attract up to 5,000 people, will be an ideal opportunity for first-timers to the sport to see the passion of polo at first hand.”
Each game will be fast-paced and furious, designed to show the agility of the horses, the accuracy of the shots and the precision of the players. All the members of the teams will be wearing Chukka polo shirts, specially made for the events. Chukka shirts will also be available for visitors to order with commissioned commemorative Polo on the Beach / Polo in the City shirts certain to sell like hot cakes.
Chukka’s well known brand of casual and stylish clothing for men, women and children has been inspired by polo clubs around the country. Flattering fits with bold colours and branding are the hallmarks of this season’s collection.
