Taking the Hummer H3 to the Goodwood Revival 2007

Hummer H3 visits the Goodwood Revival 2007

Goodwood Revival is a must see event on any petrolheads calendar. The first weekend of September sees thousands of classic vehicles descend on the Earl of March’s land in the south of England.

Racing takes place all day and there are regular flights by Spitfires and other classic aircraft. It’s a great day out and literally something for the whole family to enjoy.

The Lusso office were discussing prior to the event how best to experience the weekend. The new Bentley Azure was a suitable vehicle and we did see a few over the weekend. Maybe we could go the sportscar route and take a classic Jaguar or Ferrari. These ideas were obvious. Then the option of taking a Hummer H3 came along. Now, this is not the usual Lusso vehicle of choice, but there was something in mine and head-honcho Daniel Sharp’s mind that couldn’t stray from the Hummer idea. We decided to give it a go.

Heading out of London on a lovely Friday afternoon we started to get familiar with the Hummer. The interior is not as American as we expected. Sure its plastic but it does not look or feel that bad. The leather seats and steering wheel were pleasant, although nothing like a Bentley’s. Driving position was high and mighty and the whole car just towered over the normal traffic. It really is a big toy.

First we met up with one of our photographers who owns a Land Rover Defender; the quintessential off-roader. After 2 hours of green laning we were all surprised - it was rather impressive.
We left Surrey and headed to Brighton for our weekend accommodation. Again, continuing the theme of trying something new, we had booked two serviced apartments in the town centre. These are perfect for short stays where more space than a hotel is required. They proved to be perfect for the Goodwood weekend, with a superbly central location. Getting the Hummer into the local NCP carpark was a bit tight though…

The weekend arrived and we headed to Goodwood. Now, a quick bit of advice. The roads around Goodwood are incredibly busy from 6am till 10am on all 3 days of the Revival. Many a previous year we had been stuck in traffic for a good hour or so. So we definitely recommend enjoying a lazy morning, have a relaxed breakfast and rock up to the Revival around 11am. There’s so much to see that you’ll need two or three days to experience everything.

The Revival has become one of the yearly must-see events on the car, bike and plane fans’ calendar. The weekend is focused around the Goodwood circuit, where Ferrari 250GTOs can be seen tussling with Aston Martin DB4GTs and the 1964 Shelby American Cobra Daytona Coupe. There is a full weekend of racing and the sound of the glorious engines blasting around the circuit is what dreams are made of.
With suitable attire and passes, you can wander around the paddocks and get up close to the vehicles. Highlights for me were a Bugatti Type 35, Maserati 250F and an ultra rare prototype Ford GT40. After a fantastic two days in sunny West Sussex and it was time to find the Hummer in the car park and head back to London. Being a good foot or so taller than most cars meant this was an easy task and soon we were relaxing inside.

The Hummer really grew on us over the weekend. On congested roads a supercar can become frustrating, yet the Hummer being so underpowered for its mass meant that speeding was unlikely. It sits happily in traffic and won’t be overheating like a classic Lambo. It was just a fun car to drive around. It bought out the schoolboy in us - sort of like a big Tonka toy! www.goodwood.com
