It’s not every day that mutliple aerobatics planes feature in the views from London’s Canary Wharf. The Red Bull Air Race - in its third year - has accomplished what many people thought impossible, and have bought their high octane event into our nation’s capital.

Before you even arrive you cannot help but be overwhelmingly impressed with the infrastructure that Red Bull have managed to put together - it’s almost impossible to enjoy the action without a ticket (or an office in Canada Square).

For the more discerning fan of the Air Race, Red Bull host VIPs in a segregated area sat on the northern banks of the Thames, offering good views, great food and even better company.

Over the two days, the (£750 a ticket) High Flyers Lounge places you amongst air race fans including Tony Blair and Vic Reeves - a worthwhile investment.

As the action subsided I found myself wanting more, so enquired into the next leg of the Air Race - Budapest.

A short flight from London Heathrow and a 30 minute taxi ride through Budapest and I arrived at the Intercontinental Hotel on the banks of the River Danube.

The air race would take place over the Danube, with the start line under the famous Chain Bridge.

As the competition began the pilots flew between 2 and 3 meters from the river, leaving around 7 meters above them to the bridge. They made their way around the 15-gate course pulling up to 9.6g and crossing the finish line in around a minute and a half.

Hungarian local Peter Besenyei did not make it onto the podium but first and second were taken by the two Americans, and third by Brit Paul Bonhomme. Mike Mangold took first place with a time of 1:12.85 taking the lead in the series from Bonhomme.
