Interview: Sir Rocco Forte
LUSSO: "What defines a ‘Rocco Forte Hotel’?" SIR ROCCO: A number of things, but to start with a Rocco Forte hotel is never too big, this creates an intimate atmosphere so you can treat each guest as an individual.
Donnington Valley Hotel & Spa
The newly refurbished Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa has to be one of the easiest destinations to reach by car. Situated just a few minutes south from junction 13 of the M4, the four star hotel is an ideal retreat from the bustling city of London.
The Balmoral Hotel
When you enter the hotel lift and realise that you’re standing next to one of the country’s wealthiest individuals you know that you must be somewhere special.
A Swiss Adventure
The destination was the Grand Hotel Bellevue in the centre of Gstaad to experience the ‘out-of-season’ activities and then relax in the hotel’s spa, reputed to be one of the best in the country.
The adventure began at The Rockwell – a funky boutique hotel on London’s Cromwell Road.
Windermere's Lakeside Retreat
Sweeping into the driveway late on a Friday night, we were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by doormen dressed in black tie. Not something all too familiar in the north of England. Our bags and car were taken around to the rear of the hotel to our lodge, whilst we were led through the main entrance of the hotel.
The G Hotel
For months I’d heard whispers about a fabulous new hotel in Galway so I became determined to find out more. The g Hotel has been recognised by Conde Nast Traveller’s Hot List 2006 as one of the best new hotels in the world so it was clearly something special.
Southern Grace
There are two great things about South Africa. One is that it is in the southern hemisphere, and so it is one half of the perfect life – summer in England (OK, well maybe not this year), and winter 7000 miles further south. The second is that, unlike almost any other non-European travel hotspot, it is only one or two hours forward of GMT, so no jetlag. Get on the plane at night, go to sleep, and get off at the other end with no bizarre body clock malfunctions.
Escaping New York City
As a boy, the impending departure for a holiday abroad brought great excitement and sleepless nights. The adventure wasn’t just about the destination and the promise of waterslides, swimming pools and meals with grown ups, I was excited about the travel aspect too. The drama of the airport, shopping in duty free and the chance to inspect the plane’s cockpit.
Gastro Lombardia
The words ‘fly-drive’ are seldom associated with luxury and comfort. Instead they conjure up images of thrill seeking students braving the desert in a beaten-up Ford Taurus or a family of five cramped into a minivan smelling of nappies and baby wipes.
Bjorn Slippy
“You’ll be picked up from the airport by a sleigh pulled by huskies”. Some things really stand out when you read a travel itinerary and this was certainly one of them.
Glorious Goodwood
Another year, another trip to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. I’ve been going for years now and, as each Festival passes, I slowly hone my skills and plans in order to reach the point (which I believe is now upon me) where I can have the perfect Festival experience. I think it’s only fair that I share it.

Grand Resort Lagonissi
When making inquiries and arrangements for the trip to Lagonissi, just outside of Athens, I discovered that most high class destinations were completely booked for many months before the season even started. I guess it was not too much of a suprise - with that sort of sand & sea, Greece in the summer is “the place to be”.
Bailisscourt Hotel and Spa
Another year’s Festival of Speed creeps up on me, I had put the date in my calendar but only made a mental note to start planning the trip. The year before I was calling around frantically trying to find a hotel close to Goodwood house but on announcing the dates to the hotel I was met with a hearty chuckle, “I’m sorry, we’re fully booked”.
Plaza Athenee. Paris.
The Plaza Athénée in Paris is the hotel of my dreams. Not because of the restaurant with its three Michelin stars and its chef, Alain Ducasse, one of the Galacticos of world gastronomy. Not because of the bar run by Thierry Hernandez who is to cocktails what Pele is to football. Not because of its Eiffel Suite which, for a mere £4000 per night, will provide you with a mind-bending view of the Eiffel Tower on the opposite bank of the Seine.
La Reserve
Forgive me for being stereotypical but the English do not live in a society that encourages knowledge of ones health and body. Only now has our nation, with the help of government campaigns, advertising and health warnings, acknowledged the rise in obesity so that we are finally encouraged to take charge of our own health.
La Pleta Hotel
People that I speak to are often jealous about my job – after all, swanning off around the world to write articles seems from the outside to be an impossibly easy and fun job. Of course I like to pretend it is not really, but that is another matter.
Hotel Caruso
On a beautiful late September day, I was driving along the dramatic but tortuous coastal route along the Amalfi coast - I know that Italians love their spaghetti, but I didn’t know they had roads like it too. My destination was the Hotel Caruso at Ravello; the newest gem in the crown of the Orient Express Hotels on the divine Amalfi coast, and a beautiful haven in which to unwind!
12 Apostles Cape Town
The 12 Apostles hotel in Cape Town must have one of the nicest views of any hotel in the world, and as it looks out to the west then there is also no better place to sit and watch the sun set over the Atlantic.
Brown's - Best Room in the House
Choose a London hotel for under £100 a night and you’re hoping the physical basics are covered and you can get some sleep. Have the sheets been changed? Is the shower tray clean? Is the carpet meant to be flecked or does it have crabs?
Did Russian billionaire buy 496 million euro property?
Recently, it was reported that Villa Leopolda was sold to a Russian billionaire for just under 500 million euros. It soon revealed that Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov was behind the sale. As is the habit with Russian oligarchs, Prokhorov made his billions in precious metals. In 2007 he launched a $17 billion private investment fund, so he was definitely wealthy enough to purchase the property.

Review – Jabra Titanium Bluetooth headset
Lets be honest, no-one fancies losing their driving license and the recent crackdown on driving with mobile phones has made alternatives such as bluetooth headsets a much better option. Most of these are ugly plastic devices, so its refreshing to see Jabra taking the headsets up market.
